Every photo is encrypted on your phone (AES-256-GCM) before it is sent. The key is part of the QR code and is never sent to our server, so the server only passes along encrypted bytes it cannot read. They are held in memory, never written to disk, and deleted as soon as your computer collects them, or after 15 minutes at most.
No. Your phone's normal camera app reads the QR code and opens a web page; the photos are taken from that page.
The crop is a rectangle: it trims the edges but does not correct perspective. For the best result, photograph the page from directly above, on a flat surface with good light.
